Mark: 5:6-9 NASB
6 Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; 7 and shouting with a loud voice, he *said, “[a]What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!” 8 For He had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he *said to Him, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 And he began to implore Hi earnestly not to send him out of the country.
There are many different ways to conduct deliverance. Some deliverance ministers provoke a manifestation of the demon or demon(s) that are hindering a person and have a very full dialogue with them to find out who they are and where they came from before casting them out. Others believe that Yeshua (Jesus) did not speak to demons so neither should we. There is one exception in the bible and that is where Yeshua (Jesus) spoke to the Gerasene demoniac called Legion but even in this, there is much debate from highly respected, extremely knowledgeable and experienced deliverance ministers. Some believe that Yeshua (Jesus) asked the demon(s) it’s name and yet others believe that Yeshua (Jesus) was in fact asking the demon-possessed man his name. I have read a book wherein one whole chapter was devoted to proving that Yeshua (Jesus) was in fact asking the man and not the demon possessing the man, his name going deep into the scripture passage by way of a textual analysis. I am no bible scholar and so I am not really sure if Yeshua (Jesus) was indeed speaking to the man or if it was rather the demon but I am definitely firmly in the camp of deliverance minister’s who do not wish to dialogue with demons.
I will be the first to admit I am no authority on this. My knowledge in this is only what I have been taught through listening to teachers of deliverance and observing those that do speak to demons within a deliverance session as well as some corporate deliverance session where demons are allowed to manifest. The only actual experience I have had in terms of speaking to demons is when one of my own demons who had been cast out returned to try to get back into its previous home and when I told it firmly that it had to go in Jesus name, it said “no”. I was shocked at first and then extremely outraged. Needless to say, that was a battle that took place over a number of weeks but in the end it had to bow to the powerful name of Yeshua (Jesus). I learnt later that the reason it took me so long to completely defeat this demon was because the person who performed the deliverance for me did not break off the power that this demon had gained over me and therefore instead of it leaving quickly and quietly it kept coming back to harass me. Be that as it may, Ruach haKodesh (Holy Spirit) did speak to me during the time I was learning about deliverance and this issue of ‘to speak or not to speak to demons’ was being discussed. He said to me that occasionally it is important and even valuable to speak with the demon or demons. In addition, it can also be very valuable and powerful to know the demon’s name.
To this end, I have had two personal experiences where knowing the name of a demon proved invaluable to me. To explain it properly I need to back track just slightly. From time to time Holy Spirit reveals to me assignments of the enemy against me. He shows me an image of the person or demon that has the assignment against me and I then bind, rebuke or pray against that assignment. Once Holy Spirit showed me a woman who had an assignment against me. To my horror, one night I awoke to see her triumphant face literally pop into my room. The triumphant look in her eyes was horrifying. I rebuked her and she left and thankfully I did not see her again. I had previously read a prayer that was for the protection against trafficking and astral travelling people and demons. However, it was the first time I had actually experienced someone astral travelling into my bedroom to cause me harm. As unbelievable as this may sound it actually does happen and I have seen it twice now with my own eyes. I now add a prayer of protection for this into my protection prayers that I pray, if not every night, then regularly.
I prayed this prayer for a while over myself but once things settled down I stopped praying it. After a while another entity started haunting me. This one was really hard to remove no matter what I did, whether I rebuked it or bound it in Yeshua’s (Jesus’) name and ask Father to send angels to remove it, it kept coming back, it was this horrible ugly man’s face. One night I awoke from my sleep to find this same demon’s face so large in my room it was shocking and frightening. It was looking at me so triumphantly it was so sickening. I went to God and asked Him what it was all about and how this could possibly be happening to me. In answer to my prayer Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) gave me this demon’s name. I was so excited I just knew it was the answer to getting rid of this thing. That night as I went of to sleep, I wasn’t worried, this entity had been bothering me for a long time and had woken me harassing me from my sleep, giving me nightmares for weeks. I was awoken by it again and this time I was ready even from my sleep, I shot upright and rebuked it and called it by name all in the name of Yeshua Ha Messiach (Jesus The Messiah) and it left and I have not seen it since. Hallelujah. So once again, and I have said this before and no doubt will repeat it a lot, it is so important to follow the leading of Ruach HaKodesh (The Holy Spirit). He knows what to do in all situations.
In summary, what I am trying to get across is that sometimes in spiritual warfare to take authority over a demon or evil spirit you need to know their name. It is no different I suppose in a deliverance session commanding demons of death, or hatred or unforgivness out to leave the person they have inhabited. Indeed one of the spirits that I rebuked was call a “spirit of….” whereas, the other, Ruach haKodesh (Holy Spirit) told me their specific name. Furthermore, I have also successfully rebuked and/or bound assignments against me from a warlock of whom Ruach haKodesh (Holy Spirit) gave me a vision and told me his name. Finally, sometimes but not always it may be necessary to dialogue with a demon, but only if Ruach haKodesh (Holy Spirit) directs you to do so because they are complete liars and not to be trusted, or indeed allowed to show off, something they love. In fact, demons love any form of attention. Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) has told me on a number of occasions not to stare or look at them too longs whilst I am waiting for them to be removed from my home or presence because they enjoy it.
